NJDOT to close Route 70 westbound this weekend for roadway improvement project

(Lindenwold, NJ) – Camden County Commissioner Al Dyer has been informed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will be working on Route 70 from 9 p.m. on Saturday September 19 to 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 20. Route 70 westbound is scheduled to be closed and detoured between the ramps to and from Cuthbert Boulevard/CR 636 northbound, which will remain open. In addition, the right lane on Cuthbert Boulevard/CR 636 northbound will be closed just past Route 70.

The closure is necessary for the demolition of a culvert located underneath the center lane. The following detour will be in place:

Route 70 westbound Detour:

• Motorist on Route 70 westbound will be directed to take the ramp to Cuthbert Boulevard North/Merchantville
• Continue on Cuthbert Boulevard/CR 636 northbound and take the ramp to Route 38 West/Camden
• Take the first ramp to Cuthbert Boulevard South/Oaklyn
• Continue on Cuthbert Boulevard/CR 636 southbound and take the ramp to Route 70 West/Camden

In addition, beginning at 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 19 until 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 20, the right lane on Cuthbert Boulevard/CR 636 northbound will be closed between the ramps to and from Route 70 westbound. At least one lane will remain open. The lane closure is necessary to mitigate congestion and protect motorists both on Cuthbert Boulevard/CR 636 northbound and entering Cuthbert Boulevard/CR 636 northbound as part of the Route 70 westbound detour. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays.

“This project will make a marked improvement on some of the busiest state-owned roads in Camden County,” said Commissioner Dyer, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works. “While these closures may cause temporary delays for motorists this weekend, the improvements being made will help create safer, more reliable roadways for everyone who travels through this area.”

The work is part of a $153 million state-funded Route 70 corridor safety and improvement project that will improve gas and watermains, upgrade traffic signals at 27 intersections, replace or install four Dynamic Message Signs, improve drainage, sidewalks, and resurface approximately 9 miles of Route 70 between Route 38 in Cherry Hill and Cooper Avenue in Evesham. In addition to milling and paving Route 70, the North Maple Avenue loop ramps and the Route 70/Route 73 interchange ramps will be repaved as well. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
